Drill Bits and Hole Saws: Which Bit for Wood, Metal, Masonry and Tile

The wrong bit burns, wanders or snaps. Match the bit to the material.

  • Wood: brad-point bits for clean holes, spade bits for fast big holes, and a countersink for flush screws.
  • Metal: HSS or cobalt twist bits. Go slow and use cutting oil.
  • Masonry: carbide-tipped bits in hammer mode.
  • Tile and glass: diamond or carbide spear bits, kept cool and with no hammer action.
  • Large holes: bi-metal hole saws with an arbor for wood, drywall and thin metal. Use an electrician's size range for boxes and conduit.

Tips

Start with a pilot hole, keep the bit square, and let the tool do the work.
