New apprentices get handed long tool lists. Here's what you really need on the first day, and what can wait.
Day-one tools
- Lineman's pliers (9 in, insulated handles).
- Wire strippers sized for 10–18 AWG solid and stranded.
- Diagonal cutters.
- Needle-nose pliers.
- Multi-bit screwdriver plus insulated #2 Phillips and 1/4 in slotted.
- Non-contact voltage tester. Always verify with a meter before you touch anything.
- Tape measure, torpedo level, utility knife.
- A tool pouch that fits your belt.
Add later
Add a multimeter, fish tape, conduit bender, hole saws and a cordless impact driver once your employer tells you what the work calls for.
Learn the code, too
