Hammer Buying Guide: Steel vs Fiberglass vs Wood, and What Weight to Get

A hammer looks simple, but the handle and the weight change how it feels after an hour of work.

Handle materials

  • Steel: the most durable, and transmits more vibration. Best for framing and demo.
  • Fiberglass: lighter and better at absorbing shock. A great all-around choice.
  • Wood (hickory): classic feel and natural damping, but it can crack.

Weight

16 oz suits general household work and finish nails. 20 oz suits framing and bigger nails. Go heavier only if you swing all day.

Claw style

A curved claw pulls nails better. A rip (straight) claw is better for prying and demo.
