Socket Sets Explained: 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 in Drive, SAE vs Metric, and Impact Sockets

The socket aisle gets confusing fast. Here's how to choose.

Drive sizes

  • 1/4 in: small fasteners, electronics and tight spaces.
  • 3/8 in: the do-everything size for cars, mowers and furniture. Start here.
  • 1/2 in: lug nuts, suspension and high torque.

SAE or metric?

Most modern cars and imported products are metric. Older American equipment is often SAE. A combined set covers both.

Impact vs chrome

Use black impact-rated sockets with impact wrenches and drivers. Chrome sockets can crack under impact.

Deep vs shallow

Deep sockets reach nuts on long bolts. Shallow sockets fit tight spaces.
